Why Are Tiled Floors Perfect For Pie & Mash Cafes?

November 28, 2025

A city as big and diverse as London has a culinary array to match. You can try just about any kind of cuisine in the capital.

However, there is still room for traditional fare of the pie and mash or jellied eels variety, so if that is what you offer, the interior design of your café can go a long way towards cultivating that authentic London look.

Using tiles in the flooring and walls is one of the very first steps you should take to give your café this archetypal Victorian style.

For many visitors, Victorian London played a role in developing their idea of the city before they ever visited and while today’s capital is far removed from Dickensian times, the red brick architecture of the era remains prominent.

Where Can You See Tiling In The Décor Of Pie & Mash Cafes?

There are many good examples of this style across London. For example, the unambiguously-named Pie and Mash Shop in Islington has this look down to a T, with red brick-coloured floor tiling and shiny porcelain tiles on the walls.

You can see this in many other places, too. A Time Out Article on the best Pie and Mash cafes in London listed a dozen establishments and where the article displayed images of the café, tiled walls were commonplace. Examples included:

Some of these establishments date back a long way, to the days when Cockney dockers would eat jellied eels caught from the Thames. But others are more modern. For instance, the M Manze café in Peckham was rebuilt in 1985 after a fire.

In a city with so many opportunities to eat food from anywhere, cafes serving traditional London food of pie, mash and eels should make good use of tiled floors and walls to ensure an authentic ambience.
