Why Are Shaver Sockets Fitted Into Home And Hotel Bathrooms?

May 18, 2026

In a world surrounded by electronics, homeowners, hotel guests and even some office staff require a way to plug in some small appliances into every room possible, and any luxury interior design must be able to cater for this stylishly and safely.

This includes within the bathroom, where there are rather strict building regulations when it comes to the location and type of sockets that can be placed around sinks, bathtubs and showers.

To maximise safety, keep within electrical regulations and minimise the risk of electric shocks from the combination of water and electricity, it is not uncommon for the main power socket within the bathroom itself to look rather different from the standard three-pin adaptor we are used to in the rest of the home.

Standard socket outlets cannot be within three metres of a bath or shower, which, given that most bathrooms are barely three metres long or wide including the bath or shower, means that they are effectively outlawed from the bathroom.

However, many people have electric toothbrushes or shavers which need to be plugged in, either to function completely or to charge their batteries.

This is where the shaver socket comes in. Officially known as the BS 4573, shaver sockets are often dual-voltage, are isolated from the rest of the electricity supply using a dedicated circuit or transformer, and use induction technology to reduce the risk of electric shocks in wet environments.

These additional technologies help to make shaver plugs safer despite lacking the earthing of a three-pin adaptor, and allow for electric shavers and toothbrushes, the most common pieces of electrical equipment in a bathroom, to be used more safely.

Whilst still commonly seen in hotel rooms, gyms and some offices with shower and grooming facilities, they have become less common in homes as rechargeable batteries have increased in capacity.

Regardless, they are still a useful addition to your home when installed correctly, and can add a luxurious style as well as functionality with the right socket plates.
