The summer may have turned out to be drizzling rather than sizzling after a very promising start, but there’s still hope that a few sunny warm weeks may be just around the corner! With this mind, it’s a great time to refresh your garden and make sure that it is looking its best.
Even if the weather is not ideal, the sight of a beautiful garden through the window can be very uplifting and relaxing, and will sustain you as the season gently mellows into autumn. Here are some of the best new garden designs of the year so far if you need a little inspiration for your outdoor space.
Our outdoor living standards are now so much more sophisticated than a bench or a couple of garden chairs, and are geared up for relaxing and entertaining in style. For example, the quality and style of patio materials is much more varied than a basic choice between concrete slabs and brick pavers.
If your patio or paths are in need of an upgrade, consider alternative materials such as porcelain. This material not only looks very stylish and attractive, but it is also extremely durable and will still look great even after several seasons of very British weather! It is very easy to look after and less prone to cracking and staining than natural stone or marble.
Once you have your patio design perfected, install some comfortable all-weather garden furniture for relaxed and easy entertaining. Add to the ambience with a hurricane lamp, festoon lighting, or even a fire pit.
As the need to use the earth’s precious resources in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way becomes more urgent every year, the trend for using recycled or repurposed materials continues to grow. Salvaged pieces of wood such as old railway sleepers can be used to make raised flower beds for example, or sunk into a gravel path for extra interest.
Old stepladders make useful storage spaces inside the shed, or they can be given a coat of waterproof paint and used outdoors to make a quirky surface for trailing potted plants and ornaments. Reclaimed bricks from building sites make great edges for borders and paths. If possible, pick a variety of hues such as red, orange, cream and terracotta.
We would all like a beautiful blooming garden to enjoy, but the reality is that a gorgeous garden is the result of a lot of time-consuming hard work! If you are too busy to devote many hours to gardening, opt for low maintenance drought tolerant plants and hardy perennials that will come back to life every year with just a little bit of pruning and watering.
Lawns are particularly difficult to keep looking great. You could consider replacing it with a hard-wearing permeable surface, or go with the flow and learn to live with a little messiness. Longer grass will actually attract more useful pollinators and provide a welcome source of food and shelter for our precious wildlife.
