Tiling in your kitchen and bathroom is an investment that can and should be enjoyed for many years to come. To ensure the best chance of this happening, it’s important to regularly maintain your tiles. Here are some essential tips to keep your tiles in tip top shape so that they will always look pristine and sparking.
Kitchen and bathroom tiles in rooms with an average amount of use should be cleaned on a weekly basis, although any serious stains or spills should be dealt with straight away. If the tiles are not cleaned regularly, they can be prone to picking up mould and mildew that can be difficult to deal with, so it pays to keep on top of the small stuff.
The cleaning products you use will depend on the type of tiles that you have. Ceramic or porcelain tiles should be cleaned with a mild alkaline solution. Natural stone such as granite or marble tends to be more delicate, so check the manufacturer’s instructions about which cleaning products are the best to use.
In all cases, avoid using harsh chemicals and undiluted bleach as these can be too acidic and may damage the surface of the tiles. If you are unsure about a cleaning product, test it out on a small discrete area first of all. Do not use abrasive scourers as these will cause minor surface damage and dull the shine. Instead, use a sponge or a soft microfibre cloth.
After you have cleaned the tiles, dry them with a soft cloth to leave them looking polished and shiny, and to remove the risk of mould or mildew developing.
Grimy grouting can really spoil the appearance of your kitchen or bathroom. To avoid this fate, make a paste from two parts bicarbonate of soda and one part water, and use an old toothbrush to scrub the grout. If that does not do the trick, try adding a little distilled white vinegar, but take care not to get any on the tiles.
If you have mould or stains that are proving impossible to remove, it may be necessary to use a commercial cleaner or even consider having the affected area regrouted.
To keep on top of your tile maintenance, inspect them during your weekly clean for any signs of wear and tear such as cracks, chips, or loose grouting. Deal with these small issues as soon as possible to prevent them from escalating further and potentially creating water damage or even from falling away from the wall completely.
If you have natural stone tiles, these should be sealed on a yearly basis to ensure that they remain stain and moisture resistant.
