Top Tips For Mixing And Matching Different Styles Of Tiles

September 13, 2023

There is now an almost bewildering array of tiles to choose from, which can make renovating your kitchen or bathroom great fun, but also present some dilemmas. Modern methods of manufacturing mean that it’s now possible to recreate almost any look you desire, with a creative range of textures, patterns, shapes, materials and colours available.

Your room is a blank canvas waiting to be transformed, and it can be difficult to know what style might express your taste and personality best. A popular solution is to mix and match different tile combinations for a truly stunning result. Here are a few ideas to consider experimenting with for your dream kitchen or bathroom.

Create contrast with strong colours or patterns

Use tiles to create a focal point with dramatic colour contrasts. For example, you could tile a bathroom with large plain or neutral porcelain tiles, and use mosaic tiles to create a pleasing contrast in areas such as splashbacks or around mirrors and other features.

This effect can also be achieved with monochrome tiles, patterned tiles or metallic tiles paired with a lighter colour. It’s a great way to introduce some more adventurous tiles into your kitchen or bathroom without it being too overwhelming and busy looking.

Pair a patterned floor tile with plain walls

Patterned floor tiles, particularly bold geometric patterns or chequerboard monochrome tiles are currently very popular. Team them with a quieter tile for the walls to create a sense of balance and harmony. If you prefer, you could always work this trend the other way around, with a plain floor and patterned tiles.

Match different sizes of tile

Play around with scale by choosing small mosaics tiles for surrounds and splashbacks, medium sized tiles for the walls, and large square or oblong tiles for the floor. Tie the look together with a consistent accent colour or texture, so that you have a pleasing balance of contrast and harmony,

Play with natural textures

Tiles with natural textures such as marble, granite, or slate look timeless and beautiful. The real materials can be expensive and time consuming to look after, although they will look stunning and are highly durable. However, modern manufacturing methods mean that highly convincing and more affordable alternatives are available.

This gives you the freedom to choose from different natural textures, and contrast the roughness of granite or slate with the shine and smoothness of porcelain, for example. This is useful for breaking up larger areas and adds interest without being too obtrusive.

Vary the shapes

If you prefer to stick to one colour with your renovation project, you can add some interest by using hexagonal tiles contrasted with square or rectangular tiles. Emphasise the effect with a grout in a contrasting colour.
