Tips For Using Smart Technology In Your Bathroom Design

April 18, 2024

Smart technology is revolutionising the way we live, from our working lives to our leisure activities and healthcare. It’s also being increasingly integrated into our homes, with voice activated controls, smart security systems and so on. You might have assumed that the bathroom would be immune to these advances, but this is far from the case!

If it is a while since you updated your bathroom, you might be astonished by the high-tech assistants that can make your bathroom experience more convenient and comfortable. At one time, these features might have been seen as gimmicks that would not stand the test of time, or the preserve of the rich or dedicated tech head.

However, there is an increasing recognition that smart tech can make our bathrooms safer, more hygienic, and more energy efficient. If you are planning on installing some new bathroom tiles, you might want to consider adding some of these smart tech features while you are about it, to really bring your bathroom into the 21st century!

Multi-functional mirrors

Smart mirrors are an accessible place to start if you feel a bit daunted about the idea of integrating technology into your bathroom. For example, it’s often now standard to find mirrors with built-in LED illumination that is operated by touch or even motion sensor technology. This provides a flattering light for tasks such as applying makeup.

Mirrors can now also be integrated with usb sockets or sockets for charging shavers and electric toothbrushes, and even speakers with bluetooth connectivity for in-bathroom entertainment. If you are regularly irritated by mirrors that have been steamed up during a long shower, consider installing anti-fog mirrors with built-in heaters.

There is even a new generation of mirrors that are capable of carrying out skin analysis to identify any problem areas and recommend the best skin care routine.

Smart toilets

The humble lavatory has undergone a makeover in recent years. It’s now possible to have a smart loo with heated ergonomic seating, automatic cleaning, touch-free flushing, and bidet washing and drying systems that can reduce the need for toilet paper. This can make the toilet more hygienic.

For less mobile users, the toilets can be integrated to include foot rests to allow for different heights and positions, and they can be personalised with mood lighting and the music of your choice.

Smart showers

Showers can now be pre-programmed so that the water temperature, pressure and duration of the shower is to your exact specifications, meaning that you don’t waste any water, energy or time in the mornings. Water saving shower heads can help you to use up to 25 per cent less water per shower.

Hydrotherapy showers have features such as built-in seating and multiple jets that can target different areas of the body with varying degrees of pressure. This can help to manage the pain and stiffness of inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.

Chromotherapy is another growing area of interest, which involves using coloured lighting in the showerhead to influence your mood and perception of pain and discomfort.

Touch free taps and automatic soap dispensers

It’s now commonplace to find touch-free taps and soap dispensers in public toilets, for obvious hygienic purposes. They are now being increasingly installed in homes, especially for people with reduced mobility who find it difficult to manipulate regular taps. They are also easier for small children to use.

Touch-free taps also control the amount of water you use, reduce the spread of germs and can have a pre-set temperature to avoid the risk of scalding. Automatic soap dispensers reduce the need for disposable plastic dispensers and control the amount of soap you use each time, potentially saving money.

Smart lighting

Bathroom lighting is crucial for safety, but increasingly as we use our bathrooms as sanctuaries for relaxation and therapy, adjustable lighting is becoming a standard feature. Responsive lighting systems adapt to the time of day or night, providing a corresponding level of brightness or dimness, and coolness or warmth.

This means that you don’t have to be exposed to harsh and overstimulating lights when you are preparing for bed or using the bathroom during the night. In the mornings, you may appreciate a brighter, more stimulating level of lighting to help you feel more awake.

Motion sensor lights that automatically turn on and off as you enter an exit the bathroom can help save energy, and avoid the need to touch a switch or pull cord.
