The Most Common Mistakes To Avoid When Buying Tiles

June 9, 2023

Choosing tiles for a home renovation project should be an enjoyable experience, with so many beautiful materials and designs to choose from. However, it’s a task that requires some careful planning and forethought to avoid time consuming and costly mistakes. Here are some of the most common mistakes to avoid.

Picking the wrong material for the space

It can be tempting to choose tiles based on the colour, pattern or texture alone, but the first element to consider is the material. Think about how the space will be used and how much time you will have to maintain it.

For example, a bathroom or kitchen splashback may require non-permeable tiles if you want a hard wearing and waterproof finish that will also be easy to take care of. Porcelain tiles are a great option in this case, because they are non-permeable and very low maintenance.

Marble or natural stone tiles can give a beautiful and luxurious finish to a kitchen or bathroom, but bear in mind that they will require regular sealing to prevent moisture damage and wear and tear.

When choosing tiles for flooring, consider how heavy the foot traffic will be in the area, and if it will be prone to splashes and spills. For wet areas such as bathrooms, look for tiles with a textured anti-slip surface.

Buying the wrong size of tile

It’s important to consider how the tiles will be laid out in the space. Small rooms can feel overwhelmed by small tiles from floor to ceiling, especially if they have dark colours or a busy pattern. Larger tiles in a lighter colour may be a better choice to help create the feeling of more space and give a more seamless finish.

Larger rooms can more easily carry off smaller tiles and bolder patterns and colours. If you do want to use a strong colour or smaller tiles in a small area such as a downstairs cloakroom, consider matching the colour of the grouting to the tile to avoid an overly busy result.

Ordering the wrong amount of tiles

Measure up carefully to work out many tiles you need to order, so you can order the right amount at the start of the project. It’s always good to order slightly more than you think you will need to give you some wriggle room. Chances are one or two will be broken or spoilt if you need to cut them to size around fixtures or fittings.

If you do need to order more, bear in mind that there may be slight variations in the shade and texture between batches, so it’s best to get it right the first time if possible. Remember that it’s always useful to have a few spare tiles left over in case you need to replace a cracked, chipped, scratched or discoloured tile at some point in the future.

Finally, it’s always best to order a sample of your chosen tile, so that you can see exactly how the tone, texture, and colour will look in its intended space.
