The Enduring Appeal Of Vintage Bathroom Designs

November 6, 2023

The clinical and stark bathrooms that have dominated the design trends for so long have been making way for vintage-inspired themes in recent years. The vintage look is perhaps especially in favour at the moment as the world evolves at an ever more rapid pace, and can sometimes feel like a turbulent and unpredictable place.

Many people are seeking out the comfort of familiarity, particularly from eras when high quality craftsmanship and attention to detail were highly prized. A classic modern bathroom is not about slavishly recreating the past, but about integrating retro charm with the convenience of modern features.

Here’s a look at some of the most popular elements of timeless style for bathrooms, and how you can incorporate it into your home.

1950’s retro

The 50’s look is especially popular for bathrooms, characterised by classic subway tiles, pedestal sinks, and vintage light fixtures. Cheerful pastel colour schemes in baby blue, blush pink, or joyful yellow are a popular choice for bathrooms influenced by the 1950s. Alternatively, they can work well in bold monochrome with a pop of red accent colour.

Victorian

The Victorian style bathroom has enjoyed a huge resurgence over the past few years. At once tasteful and opulent, they are a favourite way of creating a bathroom that is both a relaxing sanctuary and a practical space to use. It is not restricted to one narrow aesthetic, so there is the opportunity to mix and match your favourite elements.

Consider how well the style will coordinate with the overall design of your home. For example, if you have an older property with lots of original features, then a very traditional approach with wainscoting, brass washstands, a roll top bath, and antique fittings will blend in perfectly.

If you have a more contemporary style home, then it may be better to mix certain vintage features such as a claw foot bath or brass fittings with a sleeker feel and a  paired back neutral colour scheme.

Art Deco

The Art Deco movement emerged from the roaring 1920s, when the world was enjoying a post-war economic boom and there was a spirit of optimism, energy, and decadence in the air. It’s a celebratory style characterised by strong colour schemes, bold geometric patterns, and opulent metallic fixtures and fittings.

It’s an ideal way to mix vintage and modern elements such as matt black fittings and frameless shower enclosures with more decorative details such as patterned floor tiles and a standalone bath.

Country cottage bathroom

Sometimes called cottagecore or granny chic, this charming country style is easy to achieve with simple touches. Choose chintzy floral prints and soft colour schemes in dusky pink or fern green.

To take it a step further, combine them with wainscoting on walls and vanity units, and rustic wooden accessories such as mirror frames and crates, storage chests or seating areas. If you have enough space, choose pedestal sinks and a statement claw foot bath.
