When it comes to the use of tiles in interior design, one of the most enduringly popular styles is that of the mosaic. These tiles work beautifully in a wide range of different settings, bringing elegance, sophistication, luxury and visual interest to both walls and floors alike.
But what makes them even more interesting is the rich and illustrious history that they have in abundance, first seen in Mesopotamia (a historical region that now includes parts of Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Iran) in approximately 3000 BC.
The first mosaics were made using simple pebbles but this soon evolved into something truly intricate, featuring materials like ivory, shells, stone, glass and ceramics.
The Greeks really took the idea of mosaic art and ran with it, creating stunning geometric patterns featuring great detail and beautiful shades of colour, a practice that was then further developed by the Romans, who used tesserae (another name for mosaics) to decorate private homes and public buildings.
Over the centuries, churches, palaces, abbeys, cathedrals and other impressive sites have been decorated in this way – and it’s a look that has never really fallen out of favour, which is why it’s such a great choice for contemporary homes and commercial properties.
Choosing style over trend is always advisable when it comes to interior decorating, as you know you’ll love the end result for years to come and won’t ever really feel the need to change it.
