They were first used on the New York subway in 1904 as an affordable and easy to clean method of wall decoration, and these are the characteristics that have ensured their popularity throughout the next century. 

Not only are subway tiles a fashionable and easy way to decorate your bathroom, but they are very versatile and you can create different designs. For a straightforward classic, simply go for bonded rows in a white or neutral colour. This look may not be cutting edge, but neither will it ever really go out of style.

To add some extra interest, you could contrast them with a stronger geometric pattern on the floor tiles with a monochrome colour scheme. For a slightly edgier look, you could stack the wall tiles vertically or even in a herringbone pattern.
