Kitchen design trends have been very diverse this year, from edgy industrial to opulent Art Deco. There has been a continuing shift away from the ubiquitous all-white colour palette towards brighter shades, and much greater emphasis on pattern. The kitchen continues to evolve as a place at the heart of the home.
With this in mind, here’s a look at some of the key kitchen trends we could be seeing in 2024.
Greens and blues have dominated the kitchen colour trends for the past couple of years, but according to Elle Decor, warm colours are making a comeback. Rich browns, purples, and burgundies along with dark stained woods are now trending on Instagram, according to interior designer Kerrie Kelly.
Kelly told the publication: “We’re witnessing a resurgence of dramatic colour tones that introduce powerful contrast, such as warm, saturated hues paired with understated neutrals.”
Natural marble is coming back into favour for wall tiles, flooring, and countertops. Although it is more high maintenance than other materials such as porcelain, it is coveted for its beautiful veiny texture and sense of movement.
It can be difficult to keep marble in pristine condition in busy areas such as kitchens, but according to Elle Decor, homeowners are more willing to accept imperfections and embrace the ‘lived-in’ look.
Outdoor kitchens on patios or even rooftops are a growing trend for summer el fresco entertaining, and going forward these spaces will be more seamlessly integrated with the indoors. For example, versatile floor tiles that can be used for both indoor and outdoor purposes are used to link both areas between sliding patio doors.
Kelly explains: “Clients want seamless transitions to the outdoors with large sliding doors, similar materials, and complementary colour palettes, allowing families and friends to enjoy the fresh air while cooking and entertaining.”
The kitchen has always been a natural gathering place as family members and friends stop by to share a drink or help out with preparing food. This emphasis on the kitchen as a social space will become even stronger in 2024, with kitchen islands that are large enough to accommodate the whole family and comfortable stools.
Kitchen islands will feature rounded corners that are more inviting to sit around and create a softer feel to the room. Where room allows, there will also be a kitchen table that encourages social dining experiences rather than isolated TV dinners.
Extensions that allow for a place to keep the clutter of the main kitchen out of sight are continuing to gain popularity. This aligns with the trend for the kitchen as a social space, because it allows noisy appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines to be shut off from the main room, and unsightly dirty dishes can be stowed away.
