Bathroom Tiles: Gloss vs Matt

October 12, 2022

As well as choosing the style and design of your bathroom tile, it is also important to consider the material; in particular, whether you opt for ones with a gloss or a matt look. Here are some pros and cons for each.

Gloss

Many people love having gloss tiles in their bathrooms, as it can make the room look bigger and brighter by reflecting the light around. Therefore, they could be an ideal option in small powder rooms.

They are also popular because they can just be wiped clean thanks to their slippery surface.

However, a big con against gloss tiles is it is easy to see imperfections in them. Even after being wiped, streak marks can remain, while fingerprints, stains or smudges can be easily seen until they are cleaned off. Therefore, they require frequent cleaning.

If you opt for glossy tiles on the floor, this can pose a risk to children or pets, as they are slippery, particularly in a damp space like a bathroom.

Matt

Alternatively, you could opt for matt tiles, which are less slippery, and therefore, safer to walk upon. This makes them a better choice for wet rooms, where the flooring replaces a shower tray.

They also require less frequent cleaning than gloss tiles, making them popular for busy households. Watermarks, handprints and soap or toothpaste smears are far less visible.

However, when you do clean them, you might find they require a little more effort than gloss tiles and need a bit more scrubbing.

They might also make compact washrooms appear smaller than gloss tiles would, as they are missing the reflective properties.
