A Guide To Selecting The Perfect Floor Tiles For Your Space

October 9, 2023

Flooring plays a central role in any interior design scheme, as it covers a significant amount of space and is highly visible. It is also important to consider the practicality and functionality of the materials to ensure that the flooring is safe, fit for the purpose of the room and hard wearing.

Tiling is a popular solution for flooring that is required to be water-resistant and easy to clean, such as bathrooms and kitchens. It’s also a fashionable choice for hallways, dining rooms and open plan living areas. With so many different materials and styles of floor tiling available, it is important to consider your choice carefully. Here are some handy tips.

Consider the area

The first step is to make an assessment of the space. Is it an area with high foot traffic such as a porch or a hallway? Consider if it is a room where water and stain resistance is a priority, such as a kitchen or bathroom. In this case, porcelain tiles are a good choice because they are durable and naturally water resistant.

If you have pets or children, scratch resistant tiles that also have an anti-slip texture may be a priority. Glossy finishes look sophisticated, but they can be too slippery especially in areas prone to water splashes, so look for a matte texture.

Size and layout

The size and layout of the tiles can have a significant impact on the look and feel of the room. Larger tiles can make a smaller space feel bigger, while smaller tiles can create a more homely and welcoming atmosphere in a large space.

The layout of the tiles can also have an impact. Herringbone or diagonal patterns can bring a sense of movement and energy, while straight patterns can bring a sense of order and harmony.

Colour and pattern

The aesthetics of the tile are of course an important consideration. Neutral tones such as grey or sand are popular choices for flooring because they look timeless and elegant, and will provide a flexible backdrop for any other interior decoration and furnishings.

Patterned floor tiles are an increasingly popular choice, especially for bathrooms and kitchens. They can bring a sense of drama and interest, but in smaller spaces or where there is already a bold decor scheme, they are best left to accent details.

Work out your budget

Floor tiles are available to suit a range of budgets. Natural materials such as granite and marble are durable and luxurious, but they are more expensive. Ceramic tiles are generally the most affordable option but they are not as durable and water resistant as some other materials.

Italian porcelain is an excellent tile choice that offers style, durability and value for money.

Ease of maintenance

Natural stone tiles may require specialist cleaning products and annually resealing to keep them in top condition, whereas ceramic or porcelain tiles are naturally more moisture resistant and will just require a weekly brush and mop.
