Tiles are a standard bathroom feature, as they are durable, waterproof, and easy to clean. However, they are also a great opportunity to add visual interest to your bathroom because they take up a large surface area. If you want to venture away from standard plain white tiles, here are some top ideas!
There is no need to stick to the same shade or colour of tile within your bathroom. A key look at the moment is to create a tonal design by starting with a darker colour such as marine blue or fern green for the lower layers, and then gradually build up lighter tones or hues towards the ceiling.
This is a really simple yet contemporary twist on coloured tiles, and will work across the whole spectrum from bolder colours to warm neutrals.
If you want to keep the design element of your bathroom on the subtle side, then you could stick to neutral colours and experiment with different textures instead. For example, the rougher texture of natural stone can contrast pleasingly with polished chrome fittings and fixtures, or shiny glazed porcelain tiles.
Textured floor tiles also have an obvious advantage in the bathroom, as they provide anti-slip resistance on wet flooring. For walls, mosaic tiles are another great way to introduce contrasting textures, such as rough metallics with polished stones or glass.
Metro tiles have been a popular choice for a bathroom for a few years now. However there are many ways to apply them besides the common brickwork pattern. In smaller bathrooms, arranging the tiles vertically can create the illusion of height by drawing the eye upwards.
The herringbone style, where the tiles are laid on the opposite diagonal in rows, is a great way to create a feature wall or even a simple splashback. To emphasise the design, use different coloured tiles or even incorporate a pattern or texture on some of the tiles.
Using a grout in a contrasting colour to your tiles, such as black grout with white tiles, is an unusual and interesting way to update your bathroom. Alternatively, create a monochrome effect by using the same coloured grout as your tiles. There is no need to stick to traditional white grout, which let’s face it is pretty difficult to keep clean!
The Art Deco era is currently en vogue, and one of the most fashionable looks is decorative geometric tiles. They look elegant and sophisticated in any bathroom, but especially in larger spaces, or to create an interesting alcove or splashback area.
This style looks stunning in simple monochrome, but also works perfectly with metallic or marbled finishes. Geometric tiles do take some time and effort to get right, as any mistakes will be very obvious, so if you are attempting this look it may be a good idea to call in the professionals!
