Living in a small house or flat presents a number of challenges for homeowners, from not being able to store everything to feeling cramped and claustrophobic.
Those who have a small bathroom do not have many options when it comes to making it bigger, as extending it would mean a complete reconfiguration of plumbing and potentially losing another room.
Therefore, it is simply a case of grinning and bearing it. However, while making a bathroom bigger is not exactly easy, making it appear bigger is.
According to Ideal Home, there are some tricks homeowners can use to give the illusion of a larger washroom. And one of these is simply to change your bathroom tiles.
“The amount of space you have and what the eye perceives aren’t necessarily the same thing,” the article stated.
“Play with the boundaries of perception by tiling the side of your bath and the wall with the same design – it makes it hard to distinguish where each begins, thereby making your space feel larger,” it went on to say.
There are a huge variety of different bathroom tiles available to choose from these days, but the magazine suggested marble as a good choice for small bathrooms.
It noted that marble-effect tiles do not look like individual squares, but appear as though the whole wall is one large sheet of marble. This makes the space seem grander, less cluttered and more spacious.
Indeed, bigger tiles give the illusion of more space than little ones, while tiles that are lighter in colour are preferable to those that are dark.
